Harbinger of Death

Harbinger was lounging in his library, finally getting some time to himself. He paused to enjoy the quiet strains of Bach before going back to reading. It was so nice to have all his work done before the holiday. It really cut down on crunch time and stress.

Then he heard the death knell. Who could be at the door at a time like this? He put down his copy of "Rise and Fall of the Roman Vampire" and went to answer the door.

When he opened it, he saw Keleos, Ladybug and Manto standing there. They'd been whispering amongst themselves, and stood up straight and clammed up when he appeared. "Hello there," said Keleos. "We were hoping you were home."

"What's this about?" Harbinger asked. "Is it time for another keg or something?"

"No, no, nothing like that," said Ladybug. "We just wanted you to join the party."

Harbinger raised an eyebrow. Usually an invitation like this was fraught with ulterior motives, motives that led to him being trussed up in a basement somewhere. "Thanks, but I'll pass," he said.

"You'll miss out on so much fun, though," said Manto, winking at him. "So many of the girls would love to have a dance with you."

He was speechless for a moment. Could this be another Deb trick? Since when did they want to party with him instead of messing with his head? "You can't be serious," he finally said.

"We are quite serious." Keleos was straight-faced. "We want you to come to the party with us."

"Come on, please do," Ladybug cajoled. "You know it'll be a blast."

"And when was the last time you really cut loose?" Manto asked.

Harbinger considered this for a moment. It had been a while...he had gone to the Incarnations Ball back in May, but it wasn't much fun, since they'd made it a cash bar instead of an open bar and were charging $3 even for a gin and tonic. And he hadn't gone dancing in years.

"Wait a minute," he said, suspicious. "How do I know this isn't some kind of trick?"

"We never kid about parties," said Manto, giving him the eye. Her sisters rolled their eyes.

"All right, I'll go, on one condition."

"Okay, what is it?"

"One sign of some typical Deb plot to ruin me, and you're all alive and back on campus with no party. Understand?"

"Yes, sir, Mr. Death!"

"Don't patronize me. Let's go."
